Extreme heat causes match suspension!

Harmon Park
08/12/10
By Steve England
For the first time in TowerTennis history - participants elect to suspend after 2-sets. AS won the 1st-set by executing fast, well placed shots (6-3). KS fights off a late push by Scott to win a 2nd-set tie-breaker 7-6(7-4). This leveled the match at one set all. The final set is yet to be played, but it should be a hard fought battle.  A loss by either player means elimination!

SH eliminates CA in straight sets!

American Legion Park
West Des Moines

Once again the heat played a factor in a TowerTennis event!  This summer has been relentless with both heat and rain.  Fortunately, the rain mostly hits overnight leaving the courts dry... but horribly hot.  Many players have come close to heat related illness in recent weeks to keep the tournament on track.  Your efforts are appreciated, but please don't risk your health!
I wasn't able to attend this match, so details are not available.  However, SH achieved her 1st ever TowerTennis victory!  I personably consider this accomplishment similar to one's 1st CTO, or maybe one's 1st radar certification - an accomplishment of profound significance!  With her straight-set victory over CA - SH advances to play the winner of the AS/KS match.  Meanwhile, CA is now eliminated from this year's competition.  Good luck next year CA! The taste of victory is worth pursuing!

CG wins battle of the headbands!

This match illustrates how you're never out of a match until the last point is won!  BW was clearly the likely victor with 1-set under his belt, and leading 3-1 in the 2nd.  Then, all of the sudden - there seemed to be a change in momentum!  Halfway through the 2nd set - CG's serve progressively became better, and better! Although both players were hitting great strokes, BW started hitting a little long!  This combined with CG coming alive as he fought off nausea from his pre-match burrito - resulted in a come-from-behind victory which took 11 unanswered games to win in 3-sets!  The heat index was 109 degrees during the match! CG tops BW 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

CG chokes back his lunch to reach victory!

BW takes loss hard - but looking forward to next match!

KN advances with OC default!

Busy schedules occasionally prevent players from getting their matches completed in a reasonable time.  OC didn't want to delay the tournament's progress. Reluctantly, he sacrificed his position and defaults to KN. KN advances to play DH.
